A book of 100 | 3 weeks left

29/01/09
Moving on from the idea of 100 receipts, I decided research and gather a fresh selection of information that follows on from the idea of receipts. With the 100 receipts, I found it rather difficult to generate an idea that would be interesting to read as a book of 100. I started of by categorizing, ordering and organizing into different formats and playing around with typography and composition (refer to previous post), until I finally a hit a wall. (Quite a big one) One of the main difficulties with the topic of 100 receipts was that it was quite difficult to identify an interesting element from the contents without simply listing out the items. (who wants to read a list of things that people buy?) I did start off looking at the times and locations from the receipts and maybe playing around with the idea of how the receipts could be used to track history and maybe tell a story, but this idea slowly burnt out aswell, due to the fact that it didn't quite have a sense of target audience.

From the crit's earlier this week, I decided to go back to an idea I had in mind earlier, which was would be to look into the idea of a wish list of 100. This idea was extended from 100 receipts, as I found it quite interesting to see what people bought and ultimately what people aspire to achieve or gain from in life. I quite like this idea as the lists collected could tell us alot about the individuals, and as people ourselves, we are programmed to be noisy, which feeds into this concept's target audience!

As my idea has extended into something that's significantly different to the receipts, I had to start collecting more information to work from. I started a new group on Facebook (Again) asking people 5 things they wanted, whether they're materialistic or fictional. Secondly I asked around 10 people including myself to fill in a list of 100 things they wanted. I personally found this process incredibly tedious and challenging, I did not expect that it would be so difficult to think of things I want in life!! Writing the list has however made me think beyond what I want right now, but also reflected my personality and things I strive for in life which is interesting. In a sense, the list was like a list of things I aim to achieve in life.

In comparison, I selected all the things people wanted in their top 5 and started categorizing, organizing and ordering into different groups and formats. Experimenting and playing around with the data found.

I think your lists are awesome. There's such a range of possibilities within them i think you could do something really nice with them. How could you interpret them visually though? Is it through pictures (photos, images, drawings) or type (fonts, sizes)? Like it though timmy.... now... VISUALISE
